Unilateral Hip Replacement Surgery Overview

The hip joint is a simple ball and socket joint at the juncture of leg and pelvis. It connects upper body with lower extremities and helps in normal movement and changing directions easily. It is the second largest weight-bearing joint in your body after knee. Head of Femur (thigh bone) is the ball which is joined to socket i.e., cup-like structure of pelvis called acetabulum. Normal functioning of the hip joint can be disturbed by various factors such as; diseases, Arthritis, or severe injury. This can result in hip pain, groin pain, muscle weakness, and limited movement.

Unilateral Hip replacement surgery is the replacement of single damaged hip joint of either side, with an implant (artificial hip) made of metal, plastic and ceramic. Hip replacement is recommended by an orthopaedic surgeon when your hip is causing unbearable pain and creating difficulty in performing daily activities normally .

After your orthopaedic surgeon has decided and discussed with you options of hip replacement surgery, you will have to undergo a detailed physical examination, blood tests, and other diagnostic tests to make sure you are healthy and there is no other medical conditions or infections that can lead to complications post-surgery. If you are over-weight, you will be advised to do exercises and get in better shape for a speedy recovery and use of walker or crutches.

Hip replacement surgery is generally done under spinal anaesthesia, means your lower body will become numb, although you will be awake during the procedure. Surgeon will make an incision measuring about three-to-six inches on your hip to expose the deeper tissues. Muscles around your hip joint will be separated so that the joint capsule is clearly visible and the damaged ball or head of femur is removed. Also, damaged part of the socket is removed and space is created to receive the artificial implant which is fixed via screws.

A narrow channel is created on the head of femur to receive the ball part of the implant which is secured with cement or metal alloy. The materials in your new ball-and-socket joint press against one another easily to help restore motion in your hip. Surgery duration is about one to two hours.

Hip replacement is a major surgery and requires hospitalization of about 3-4 days. After surgery, you will be kept under observation and your vital signs will be monitored. After surgery, you may feel some pain but that can be managed with medication. Once your signs are normal and you are alert, you will be shifted to a normal hospital room where physiotherapist will start with your exercise program, initially they will help you sit up in bed and show you how to perform light exercises. You may even stand and walk a short distance with the help of walker. Physiotherapist will work with you each day in your hospital stay and help you walk a little bit farther. Your road to recover begins with these simple exercises that will eventually help you regain strength and functional use of your hip.

Before your discharge, physiotherapist will plan out an exercise program for you which will play a major role in your faster recovery. You will have to continue with the exercises you were doing in hospital so that blood circulation to your legs and feet is normal, chances of developing a blood clot is reduced, your muscle strength is regained and hip movement is improved. To avoid blood clot; you will be instructed to take blood thinning medication, perform early movement and ankle exercises, wear compression stockings and keep your leg elevated with the help of pillows.

In normal cases, people underwent hip replacement start doing mild physical activities six weeks after the surgery, after twelve weeks they can walk or do cycling. Although, how faster you recover depends on various factors such as; your age, your general health status, the strength of your muscles and the condition of your other joints.
