Shoulder Replacement Surgery Overview

Shoulder joint is a type of ball and socket joint which allow us to move our arm up and down, back and forward, or in a circle. The ball is the top of the humerus (arm bone) and the socket is within the scapula (shoulder blade). Joint is held together by ligaments and tendons and a layer of cartilage tissue keeps them apart so they don’t rub against each other. Sometimes, the normal functioning of shoulder joint can be disturbed leading to a painful condition due to severe injury, Arthritis or degenerative joint diseases.

Shoulder replacement or Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure in which the damaged humerus bone (ball) is replaced with a metal implant and the socket portion of the joint is then cleaned and replaced with the plastic socket that is cemented into the shoulder blade. If only one of these two bones needs to be replaced, the surgery is called a partial shoulder replacement, or a hemi-arthroplasty.

Popular Hospitals That Offer Shoulder Replacement Surgery In India

Shoulder joint which can’t be treated by physiotherapy or medicines requires shoulder replacement surgery. Before you undergo shoulder replacement, you will be likely to get a complete physical exam and X-rays or other imaging tests done so the surgeon can get a detailed picture of damage at the joint and also ensure that you are healthy and don’t have any other medical condition that can lead to complications post-surgery.

You will be instructed to stop taking certain drugs especially narcotic pain killers, several weeks before the surgery. Also mild exercise will be advised along with lifestyle modifications such as to stop drinking or smoking.

You will be asked not to drink or eat anything for 6 to 12 hours before the procedure. Before you are taken to operation theatre, your vital signs are checked and a mark is made on the shoulder undergoing surgery to ensure that the correct shoulder is being operated on. Shoulder replacement surgery is considered a major procedure and is done under general anaesthesia means you will be asleep and also sometimes a combination of spinal and general anaesthesia is administered to make the shoulder region numb and you are unconscious.

During the procedure, surgeon makes an incision approximately 6 inches long, starting at the top and front of the shoulder and separating along the deltoid and pectoral muscle to find a nerve-free area for minimizing nerve damage. Then cuts are made through deeper tissue to enter the shoulder joint where the head (top) of your upper arm bone (humerus) is removed and new metal head and stem implant is fixed in to place with cement. After which the surface of damaged socket is smoothened and implant is cemented. Incision is closed with staples or sutures and a dressing (bandage) is placed over it.

Shoulder replacement surgery lasts for about 3 hours and after which you will be kept under observation until your vital signs become normal and you are alert. Once you are conscious, you will be shifted to a normal hospital room and may require a hospital stay of 2-3 days. Initially, you may feel surgical pain and swelling in your shoulder which will be managed by pain-relieving medications and cold-compresses or ice-packs.

Your arm will be secured with a brace to control movement. After a day or two, physiotherapist will help you start moving your new shoulder joint to avoid stiffness and get it working. You will be provided with exercise plan to be strictly followed at home for faster recovery.

You will need to follow the post-operative instructions and exercises very strictly because doing exercises in wrong way may hurt your new shoulder. You’ll do exercises that will gradually improve the functioning of your new joint. Don’t rush things: It may take 4 weeks before you can pick up anything heavier than a glass of water. Your arm will need to be in a sling for 2 to 6 weeks with no active movement and 3 months before strengthening.

Normally, Shoulder replacement surgery relieves pain and stiffness for most people. You should be able to resume your normal daily activities without much problem. Many individuals are able to return to sports and other recreational activities much like before. The longevity of new shoulder joint depends on after-care and the amount of stress placed on it. With normal use, a new shoulder joint can last for at least 10 years.
